Tune in! I do several jokes you might know. Also on the bill is the delightful Charlyne Yi and the young and handsome Chris Colfer. The three of us are probably gonna start a band later on in life. Just a hunch.
You miss the point. Political opinions are influenced everywhere. Comedy clubs are a political venue. No, I don’t think comedians have more “grains of truth” in their acts, to generalize, any more than some random guy’s opinions have “grains of truth.
The danger of this is that the unfounded opinions of comedians are given more weight than the equally unfounded views of the average guy because comedians are humorous and charismatic.
And I write the way I talk normally. I’m not trying to appear anything, the words I use in blog posts are the words I use in casual, relaxed conversation.
Perhaps I should have clarified by saying “comedians who engage in political humor” though, and not all comedians.
Yeah, right. Just how maybe I should’ve said “chefs who engage in political cooking though, and not all chefs,” when I got mad at the guy who said “The right wing are all corporate puppets” as he plated my second course. Are you fucking kidding me that you can have your high-and-mighty blog but you don’t discern between types of comedy? You really just pulled your own rug out, man.
"Comedy clubs are a political venue"? Now I’m done even arguing with you because clearly you’re out of touch with society. Do you mean it is as one makes it? Like how comedy clubs are as much a political venue as Tumblr is. Does that resonate? So everything is a political venue? McDonalds drive-thru is a political venue? Christmas dinner is a political venue? Your life sounds frustrating and sad.
No, if it’s funny, that means it’s funny. Moreover, the comedian probably oversimplified the situation or stretched the truth to make it appear funnier and the butt of the joke to appear stupider.
I know that there is a perception that the comedians are criticizing the bloated institutions, really they’re zealots for the status quo, have too many opinions and lie and twist about their opponents.
A comedian exaggerating the truth for humorous effect? Well holy shit. I’m astonished and appalled that someone would stretch the truth (which would still mean it includes some truth, no?) for the sake of making it funnier.
Not sure why I started following this blog. It would pop up here and there with some good ideas painted in a thick coat of pretension. But now it does truly seem like you’re an lonely intellectual drag that can’t even accept that a grain of truth in humor is just that—a small amount used to inspire an entertaining anecdote. If you’re upset that comedians aren’t anarchists, you’re right—we aren’t. I don’t know any that claim to be. But we are people with opinions (right again), possibly shared ones, that others may find entertaining. Hence the title of “comedian.” We work in comedy clubs—not churches, not government offices. If we weren’t trying to make people laugh first and foremost, then you can call us politicians and preachers, because that’s exactly how we’d be acting. I think you mean to criticize the unthinking ones who mistake a comedian to be a truth teller. Your anger is misguided. You want to hate the gullible. You want to hate those who don’t overanalyze the ever-loving shit out of things with a magnifying glass like you do with your blog. But you can hate them. It’s your right. They can hate you for boiling everything down to bone-dry facts from atop your joyless pedestal. That’s their right. I can try to make them laugh and forget that maybe things are shitty a lot of time. I’m going to tell jokes.
Brian Eugene Abrahamson: Grifter, Deadbeat Comedy Booker
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO TOURING COMICS: Avoid working for Sioux Falls booker Brian Eugene Abrahamson at all costs. He will not pay. He is not a sad-sack down on his luck as he’d like you to believe. From what I’ve discovered after the fact, he books people with the promise of a set amount but has no intention of paying them the agreed flat fee. I was lucky that I wasn’t relying on the promised guaranteed amount for my bills, but others haven’t been so lucky. Brian Eugene Abrahamson needs to be ousted from booking comedy shows and the best way I know how is to take to public forums.
Feel free to repost this in any comic forums you utilize to warn others that you WILL NOT BE PAID if you work for Brian Eugene Abrahamson. Or give me the names of any viable comic forums and I will be happy to contact them myself.
Abrahamson has deactivated his Facebook and Twitter accounts, as he’s done in the past when comics have rallied against him for the same reason. He will terminate any means of communication until the trouble blows over, then resurface to book more comics not aware of his scam. It is my intention to make sure that doesn’t happen again. As I’ve said, put the word out that Brian Eugene Abrahamson doesn’t pay his comics the amount they’ve agreed upon, therefore he has no business working in a promotional capacity. To clarify, he works independently and is not affiliated with any clubs in the area of Sioux Falls. As a matter of fact, he is banned from his hometown club, to the best of my knowledge. So if that says anything…
Thanks for listening. Spread the word if you are a comic and understand that if you manipulate someone and mess with their source of income, it shouldn’t be tolerated.
